Thanks to its abundance of powerful electrolytes, coconut water is liquid gold. If you’ve ever reached for this delicious, hydrating drink yourself, you may be surprised to know that it can be just as beneficial for your dog as it is for you.
Most dogs are dehydrated
Just like humans, dogs get (and need) moisture from food. But a diet that consists of dry kibble or low-moisture food doesn’t provide adequate hydration, which can negatively affect digestion, kidney function, and more. Oftentimes, the water your dog drinks from their bowl isn’t enough by itself either. Even raw-fed dogs are less dehydrated but can use more help.
Hydration is critical for kidney health and gut health
When your dog is sufficiently hydrated, their body becomes a well-oiled machine. Along with allowing the kidneys to properly flush toxins, hydration also supports healthy digestion and nutrient absorption, promotes regular bowel movements, helps maintain the gut lining’s integrity, and keeps blood pressure and circulation stable.
Dehydration signs to look for
If something feels off with your dog, trust your gut: dehydration can lead to serious problems with the kidneys, gut lining, and immune function if ignored. A few signs to look out for, especially in hot weather, include dry nose or gums, lethargy or low energy, poor appetite, sunken eyes, sticky saliva, and loss of skin elasticity.
Coconut water 101
Combatting dehydration in your dog is easier (and more delicious) than you may have thought. This natural elixir is rich with electrolytes like potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sodium which work to regulate fluid balance, support nerves and heart health, boost enzymatic function, and more.
Did you know: coconut water has been used as plasma replacement in jungles of third world countries in emergencies due to its similar makeup to and integration with human blood!
Safety tips to keep in mind
In moderation, coconut water can work wonders for your dog. Make sure to choose unsweetened and pure coconut water. You can also dilute it with their water or food. In actuality, there is no big downside except excess trips to go urinate. But you do not need to give much. A little goes a long way. Give proportionate to their size. Large dogs don’t need more than 1-2 cups a day. If you’re on a hot walk, pre-hydrate them with it. If they’ve had a good amount of exercise, support them post-exercise with it.
Tips from our founder, Rob
Rob says coconut water is a superior tool for hydration. He uses it to get Gus to drink, because Gus is not a big water drinker. So Rob will plan his hydration sometimes like he does his meal timing. He also notes, it’s a great flush to the entire GI tract and colon. So if you want to encourage a bowel movement, give coconut water before your walk! Rob also dilutes it, 50% coconut water and 50% clean spring water.
